Extractions

Our dentists make every effort to preserve your natural teeth. However, extractions are necessary when decay has made the tooth unsalvageable or when you have an advanced periodontal disease. When a tooth is malformed, damaged, impacted or ingrown, different procedures are used, but all extractions are considered surgery. Depending on which tooth is removed, we can offer you a replacement in the form of a dental implant or oral prosthetic.

FAQs

  • Before any tooth is removed a thorough examination of the tooth and options will be presented. When an extraction is the only treatment option, anesthetic will be placed around the tooth so that the tooth and surrounding area is numb. During the extraction, you will feel pressure being applied to the tooth while it is being removed.

  • Just like every person is unique, every tooth is unique in its shape, size and position within the jaw bone. Some teeth have a single root, others have two roots and some have three roots. Some roots are straight and some are curved. All of these factors have an influence one how easy a tooth is to remove.

  • This scenario is very common and will be discussed with each patient. A determining factor whether an implant can be placed or not is determined by how much bone is present after a tooth is removed. A stable implant requires bone. If not enough bone is present after a tooth is removed then a bone graft can be placed into the extraction site so that an implant can be placed after the bone graft has healed.
